Renaming of M-Street

The film "The Long Way of Mohrenstraße" (2021; Link) by director Loraine Blumenthal documents the history and renaming of M-Straße for the permanent exhibition and online presentation of the Mitte Museum. In August 2020, the district council (BVV) in Berlin-Mitte passed the following resolution: "The district office is requested to rename Mohrenstraße [...] and to start the renaming process immediately. According to today's understanding of democracy, the existing racist core of the name is burdensome and damages Berlin's national and international reputation. […] As a new name, the BVV proposes that the street be named after Anton Wilhelm Amo (around 1703 – after 1753), the first scholar of African descent at a Prussian university. […].“ (Printed matter 2586/V) The decision was preceded by decades of effort, mainly by blacks and Afro-diasporic activists.
