Company R. Fuess
In 1891, the R. Fuess company, known for its scientific precision instruments, settled at Düntherstraße 8. In addition to the manufacture of medical equipment such as microscopes, the company specialised in meteorological instruments at an early stage. Its boiling apparatus for height measurements was important for surveying and mapping newly acquired lands, among other things.
From 1899/1900, the company also produced rangefinders, telescopic sights and heliographs for the army and navy of the German Empire. The heliographs were used to transmit messages and were mainly used in the German colonies in Africa. Production for the military, which was intensified in both world wars, was the reason for the company's success. After the Second World War, the company tried in vain to make a new start and was dissolved in 1976.
