Clara Ervedosa studied German and English in Lisbon and Regensburg and received her doctorate in Kiel and Coimbra. She then researched and taught at the Universities of Vila Real, Sheffield and Manchester as well as at the Gender Research Group at the University of Kiel. Her publications focus on the interdependencies between language, migration/racism and the nation, the comic as an aesthetic expression of shock and différance, as well as the literature of immigrant women authors (especially Yōko Tawada and Emine Sevgi Özdamar) and the Black German writer May Ayim. More recently, she has also dealt with discursive processes of exclusion as a stabilization strategy of fragile national and European identities, the alteration of the South and the Mediterranean region in German everyday discourses, such as the category "Southerners" in police reports.
